One year ago, the PCS board terminated Principal Andrew Goldenkranz for undisclosed reasons. One year later, and there is still no replacement at the helm. Three months to define the position, another month to agree on a job title, a world-wide search with over 100 applicants, multiple day-long interviews and the PCS board is unable to find anyone in the world capable (or is it willing?) to lead their school.
Since PCS has not made the news public, we’ll be the first to welcome their newest board members: Denine Guy, a Superior Court Judge for Santa Cruz County; Tom Morrell, an attorney specializing in real estate; and Sharmaine Cheleden, who will join the school from the Soquel district to c0-chair their Parent Volunteer Organization.
This board, without a school leader, is facing serious legal challenges*, deep cuts from the state, a staff forced to accept loss of merit pay, rifts within their ranks**, unfilled openings in the upper grades, a search for a permanent home, plans to change their charter to add 6th grade and on-going challenges to meet their diversity requirements. It’s a tall order for a group of volunteers without deep experience in public education or policy.
* More to follow regarding the pending legal action against PCS for operating the lottery in violation of the California Education Code.
** Sudden termination of Board Member Kathy Kelly in February, 2009 in a split vote.
